K&N Intake Installed

Well I installed my intake finally. here are a few photos.

The istall is pretty strait forward, instructions and photos are good.

The only thing I would recommend is you take off the wheel to acces the bottom bolts for the battery box. You can do it with the wheel on but have to be a contortionist to get your are between the fender skirt and wheel.

Oh also be carefull with the manifold breather tube. When connected with the new hose it can get into the radiator fan. Thats why you see mine where it is. I will relocate it once I get a large zip tie and I will run it under the intake tube.

I havn't really romped on it yet but it sure seems like the exhaust is louder now. Is that possible?

I was mounted on the Battery box. That had to come out. Theres not much cable to work with so that is where it ended up!! 3M Heavy Duty Velcro does the job!! :D

Got the K&N done this morning...took my time and had it done in an hour and a half...pretty simple...turned the wheel all the way to the left, and it seemed to work out fine.
Fired her up...man this truck can move some air.
Immediate improvement in throttle response...
The sound of air being sucked through the intake can be heard outside the vehicle... pretty noticable...not bad... but different.
For sure loosened up some ponies, can feel the difference...truck will break loose even easier now...
Need to get that lowering kit on next...going to need it with continued mods/HP increases.

Overall very pleased with the K&N

Thanks again Womster for the GB

marc t, i have always found that cai's increase exhaust sound output. i guess that it is because the motor is flowing more cfm of air so the is more exhaust flow. i was expecting my QC to do the same, but thanks for the info and pics

I put all the nuts on the outside. It's all assembled, just waiting for the snow to melt so i can actually take the truck out to install it...i probably wont be getting back to you on the installation for about 2 weeks at this rate lol. we got another couple of inches this mourning.

Just thought I check this site to see if anybody can help out my nonmechanic skills!!!!! I went with the nuts on the inside. After using two washers per bolt(didnt realize this at first) it seems to be the same amount of clearance. I also took those minature directions inside under some light so I could actually read what bolt to use..... Got a little zeppelin on the stereo and some cold bud select going so its all good!!!

Thanks guys

Patrick, I put the nuts on the outside and after I got the thing in place I changed them. I put the nuts on the inside I think it looks cleaner. Just pull on that sensor it will come out It's even harder getting it into the K&N piece. I broke mine trying to unplug it ( the electrical connection) something about a clip you are supposed to squeze together or something. And also It's easier to put the sleeve on the K&N piece first not the TB as the directions say. and watch out for the hose that goes to the filter after the install, it is very close to the fan and mine was rubbing on the idler pulley. I took a short pice of tubing and removed the long piece of plastic tubing and put the short piece in it's place rerouted the hose behind the bracket you add and with the new hose they give you it's a perfect length. You don't have to do that just look where your hose is and make sure it's out of the way. Good luck Phillip

All good info...have the nuts outside..as long as thy were all the same was good for me. The sensor can be a pain, I used a little silicone spray on the new rubber insert before I shoved it into the K&N. I also had to razor off a little extra plastic inside that hole to make the fit round. There was some extra in there from the plastic mold I guess.
The sensor has a red clip you need to slide foreward before removal...then squeeze the clip. Once that clip is off pull the IAT sensor out of the old one once it's removed.
For sure anchor the rubber sleeve to the K&N before anchoring it to the TB.
Zip strip the hose that pigtails into the filter...I made sure mine was out of the way..but as stated its close to the fan.
Other than that just make sure to snug everything up..especially that alternator bolt.
Take your time...enjoy the ride when done...seemed to take the PCM a bit of a ride to figure out what was going on...then HELLO!!
Like I said...the V-10 is an air pig, and you will hear what I mean if you fire that truck up in the garage...you can really hear her pulling air through the new K&N
Good luck Patrick.

I trimmed some of the tubing. It was too long. Put the nuts on the outside. I did not have to relocate the ac tube though. I checked a rechecked and it wasn't near anything?? Anyone one else get confused here??? The IAT is a royal PITA. I used a set of needle nose vice grips to get it out. Put the grommet in the tube first, then I used some special mechanics lubricant to get it in the grommet (saliva) ;)

Also, the two silicone tubes are different diameters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Of course i managed to get the smaller hose on the bigger connection, then realized my error.

I did not have the two tubes, Mine only had one for the idle air hose. However the pvc hose reached the the filter fine. I was just a little confused at first.

:) :) :D I finally got it done. First the o2 sensor, sprayed a little wd40 on the outside part not the inside of the connection and it pulled right out and installed real easy into the k and n tube. I also zip tied the tube that might get caught in the fan with the tube holder bracket, I have a pic of it. Its right under the silver clamp deal on the k and n tube. Now it cant move so no slidy into the fan.....just in case!!!! Yes it took me 3 times as longer as you gearheads but the result is just the same :D :D :D

Took it out on the highway for a couple of runs.......waited for traffic to clear and took off and the tires were spinning without dumping the clutch and without full throttle :D nice, then a real nice scratch into second at 4k rpms. Response is quicker or so it seems, the sound is really cool....when runnning next to a wall by the road I could hear the air thirsty pull of the filter!!!! Very cool...

Now I got that smile you all have. Overall it really cleans up the engine bay as well, looks way better than the stocker.

I've had mine for about 2 months and had no intentions of spending money (other than gas) but I have since added the K&N, and magnaflow cat back, both a must in my opinion, radar detector, tail gate lock, tonneau cover, viper badges. And there is more to do! Good luck on holding back, I am much too weak.

I know nothing of the Maryland emissions laws. But I think the Magnaflows are 50 state CARB approved and really do not change out any of the emissions equipment. I don't see why they would not be.

I did find this on Magnaflows page

Question: Are MagnaFlow Performance Exhaust systems legal?

Answer: YES, all of our Cat-Back Exhaust Systems comply with most state and federal laws with the exception of the Magnapacks. (Please note, local laws may vary. Contact your local law enforcement for specific guidelines.) Our products are designed and tested to meet legal sound level limits; however, when used in conjunction with other products (such as air intake systems or exhaust headers), the overall combined effect might cause particular vehicles to exceed the allowable limits.

A new law (27150.2 VC) does not require police to use a sound meter to test for excessive noise. A citation is now based upon the officers judgment. Cited violators may have testing done at a smog referee station.

Also, check with www.sema.org for more info. SEMA is a trade organization of the automotive aftermarket, which has been active in protecting consumer rights.

Maryland Inspection Standards Proposal Withdrawn 2003

Responding to SEMA’s comments in opposition, the Maryland State Police withdrew a proposal to amend portions of the state’s vehicle inspection regulations. The Maryland proposal was heavily weighted in favor of original manufacturer equipment and specifications for wheels and tires, exhaust systems, bumpers and lighting. The Maryland State Police opted to withdraw the proposal instead of incorporating SEMA’s recommendations.

When I had my Cummins diesel I removed the muffler the first month I owned it. Had to take it in for an emissions test. The guy doing the test loved the sound. Got stopped for speeding. Cop asked what I had done and said it sounded nice. I don't think the MagnaFlow would be louder than an open exhaust Cummins.

I know for some reason they will not pass it if you go to buy it with it on. I had a friend buy a Yukon with Flowmaster on it and he had to get the stockers to pass MDs used vehicle purchase test. So don't throw away the old system. However he put the flowmaster system back on and he passes the two year test, wierd. Have to be a rocket scientist to figure this shiet out.

Here are a few pics of the K&N install. I may have installed mine a little differently. I used the double male connector that came with the K&N to bridge the original hard plastic tube to that 90 degree elbow, and ran the hard plastic right into the filter vs. a rubber hose. A little cleaner, and not so much flexible rubber hose. Other than that the same install. Really liking the kit.
