Another engine noise!

:mad: Hi guys, and gals. I had my valve spring failure post not too long ago, and it got fixed within a reasonable time frame. My problem now is I'm hearing a valve "tapping" noise from the engine. It won't appear until the engine is warmed up. In fact, if you take it on the highway for a jaunt, it becomes the most noticable. I've noticed the oil temp at 190-210 when it's really loud. You can hear the noise in the cab with the radio off, whether idling, or driving. It's definitely from under the valve covers when you pop the hood! I'm wondering if this is "normal" or if I'm all alone here!? I don't want to take it back to the dealer until I have some proof that it's abnormal! I first thought valve adjustment, but it only does it hot! Now I'm leaning towards an oil issue? I really appreciate all your input! Thanks!

First off, it's not normal. These engines have a tappet noise when warm, but not so loud that you hear it in the cab at speed. I would suggest getting it back to the dealers ASAP so the damage does not get worse. It is possible that you bent a valve when the spring broke and they missed it. Do you know if they pulled the heads to change out the springs? If they did they should have see it, but if they R&R the springs with the head in place they could miss it. Does it run rough, backfire or any popping out the exhaust?

It's not good! Like Silverback said, if the dealer R & R'd the springs with the head still on, they would have no idea if a valve was slightly bent. Sounds like a hung or bent exhaust valve that is not completely closing. Do a compression and leak down check to see if one cylinder is down.

I dont think they mean the popping when you let off the gas or downshift. We all have that kind of popping and gurgling sound, which is good!!!

That's what I thought, but I did slam 1st when I was looking for 3rd the other day! :eek:

Here's some more info. The truck runs great, even when the noise is at it's worst. Why would the noise not be apparent when cold?? Especially if there's a bent valve? I drove the truck from work to home today. The oil temp reached 190 and the noise was very slight when idling. It seems like it gets really bad if you take it out on the highway. No excessive popping, only the normal exhaust burble from the Magnaflow. I don't feel I should take it apart, or even do a leakdown, because it's under warranty. They may not like me tinkering with it!! I'm just wondering if anybody else has heard this before in their trucks!! Thanks guys!

First are you sure it's valve train related? Can you tell if it's at crank speed or cam speed? Remember that the crank makes two revolutions for every revolution of the cam. Since it does it at an idle try using a stethoscope to narrow down the location. No stethoscope? Use a long handled screwdriver (plastic end, not wood) or better yet, a long extension for a ratchet.

rod im in connecticut to where are you goung to bring it make shure they have a viper tech that works at the dealer your going to bring it to. the viper motors are noisey but when in the truck ther pretty quiet.

For a few months i hade a strange Valve noise also my dealer can't find it
i checkt it later by my self
i find out they take the wrong motor Oil
now i have Mobil 1 - 10 w 30 syntetic and the problem is gone

I drove the truck fairly hard last night. I've finally hit the 500 mile mark! The oil temp reached 200 and the noise was slight, but I'm begining to wonder if it IS normal, and I'm just being too anal!? I work on cars for a living, and the noise doesn't seem "normal" but I work on Subarus, not Dodges! Anyways, I'm going to change my oil soon, and go with the recommended 0W40 Mobil One. I'll still be keeping an eye on the engine, but for now I'm gonna enjoy it, and have some fun! Thank you to all for your input!!
