Will there be a negative affect of removing too much weight from the rear in the form of loosing traction?

With street tires and not enough seat time I feel it would. I have slicks for the truck now but haven't made a pass with them yet.

You see how serious I am about weight reduction. If the truck doesn't sell before it goes into storage this thread is going to get even more serious.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but where is a good place to get a drag slick & rim package?

Not a problem, I bought my slicks second hand from a VTCoA member who needed bigger ones for gear ratio purposes after adding 200hp. Our trucks are tricky for slicks. I am going to give you the long version.

Slicks - The wrinkle side wall absorbs drivetrain shock and reduces the possibility of breaking something in the driveline. 16" wheel is the way to go, more selection of sizes and tire itself is more affordable. The downside, expect to spend 8-10 hours grinding down your rear calipers so the wheel clears. A VTCoA vendor is working on bolt on caliper kits to fix this problem, but not available yet. Pro Comp 1069 wheels, or something similar, are the best. They are available on Summit for $126 each.

Drag Radials - Available in only one size that will work for us gear ratio wise. M&H 390/40/17. Almost clears the rear calipers but I have heard rumors of the wheel weights being shaved off after several runs due to clearance issues. You can use stock Ram 17" wheels or basically any other 17" wheel that will bolt up to our trucks.

My recommendation - Go with slicks but make sure they are tall enough for your 4:56 gear ratio so you don't run out of gear on the top end. I also have a gear ratio calculator that will help you determine the proper tire size to optimize the gear ratio you are running.

Hoooooly cow, that is overwhelming. I guess it's not as simple as calling up Summit or Jegs or TireRack, eh? I am thinking of purchasing a set to swap out at the track, something that allows my truck to be a daily driver, too. Clearly I need more education on this topic.

Oh, and I went ahead and started a new thread so we wouldn't be stepping on your weight reduction:
