cam sprocket bolt recall

JUst picked my truck up from Maton in Honolulu yesterday 5/3. It was purchased from Dodgeland in Los Vegas, NV. and thankfully went back to the selling dealer prior to shipping from Long Beach. Truck was dropped off on a monday afternoon...picked up completed wed. pm. I think two days is about right..its a real ***** of a job for the service dept. Be patient, whats most important is its done right.

Its only a 6 hour job. If its taking 2 days, then there real busy with other things or the mechanic dosen't know what he's doing.

no-chyrsler onlys PAYS for 6 hours. it does take at least all day to do things right & neat. if you dont do things like that for a living it makes is hard to comprehend, but be patient, & hope you have a tech that cares. the last person to piss off is your tech! :D
i called dealership ,truck wont be done till friday .5 days to tighten bolts.i even made my appoint and they said tues night it would be done ,well that was yesterday
This is the most Viper engine work that most techs have ever done. Before, most engines that needed work were sent to Arrow. They may be as nervous as we are.
After Recall Power/Torque Loss

I took delivery of Ram SRT-10 3-11-04 Drove great, good power/torque. At 600 miles it went to selling dealer for factory recall on cam bolt retorque. I picked up truck and it ran poorly ie low power and torque. Returned to dealer and they reflashed PCM. It ran better but still did not run as well as it did before recall. They say that it runs Ok. I had WestCoast Viper Dyno and it produced 401 corrected S.A.E. RWHP. They had Dynoed another stock Ram SRT-10 and it made 428 corrected S.A.E. RWHP. Also the air fuel ratio was very rich 9. something to 1 (off graph as graph only went to 10 to 1 air Fuel Ratio. Took Dyno sheet to dealer they kept it for 3 days and said it runs Ok. They said they contacted the factory and were told "Do not do anything". Went to another dealer and had the same run around. Exact same story but this time factory rep drove truck. Talked with John Hennessy and he told me that he has Dynoed 8 stock Ram SRT-10's and they all had between 428-439 corrected S.A.E. RWHP with 35-48 more foot pounds of torque than my truck makes. Any one else with the same problem after recall work?

fstjack,

I can only wonder if there was some way that they moved the cam sprocket in relation to the timing chain? The loss of power after a "retorque of cam bolts" is strange. I don't have any clue what is involved in the recall. Keep us informed as to what you find out. By the way, I enjoyed the long phone calls the other night exchanging stories and info. Try to enjoy your truck,
See Ya,
Mark
Does this recall go for ALL Viper's/RAM's? Or just between certain build dates? Any easy way I can find out if my truck may need it?

TIA

I gotta catch up on some of these problems now that I own one.
Hammer- u r probably in the clear because you just picked yours up. unless yours was sitting in the dealership for ever, and they are morons you should be golden.

last posts slightly bother me about the vast difference in power, but then again mine feels fine. only complaint is that in the garage when i turn it on it kinda whines.

fstjks- stay diligent and get what you want.
Thanks trev. I'll be going back to the dealer next week, so I'll mention it to them just to be sure.

I'm just about certain the two trucks this dealership had (past tense as they sold both of them yesterday :D ), were only there for about 2 weeks.

Fstjack,

I purchased my 1st RAM SRT10/Black on 2/18/04 it was new but had 700 miles on it (Apparently nascar folks were driving it, as the certificate has all their sigs on it from the race that weekend) It ran perfect until I took it in for bad vibrations at 140mph. They did the cam bolt recall on it. While in for service, I purchased a RED one, and noticed it had WAY less torque/power than the Black one. The dealer said it was probably the clutch slipping as it had 2 miles on it. After break in, it was on par with the black. When I got the Black one back, it was noticably slower. Dealer said it was fine. I took it to another dealer, and they found: Hose clamps off, the engine was missing because of an o2 sensor malfunction, and some other shoddy work. After they fixed the issues, they both ran the same. I drive the trucks real aggresive (Slide into stops, drift around corners, pedal to the metal 100% of the time 7.5mpg :) . The clutches went out in both of them. While in service awaiting parts that were on national backorder, I purchased a Silver one. I wasted no time in breaking it in. It had WAY less power than the Red or Black one did. They compared the silver one to my other two and found defected clutch/pressure plates, slave cylinder, improper fuel mixture settings.

Things to check, is the torque setting on the bolts on the pressure plate (known issue). o2 Sensor, and fuel mixture. You can do a quick check on your transmission, roll back slightly, rev up to 2500/3000RPM, let off the cluch in first. You should stop rolling back immediately and start to move forward, if not, something is wrong. Additionally DC is starting to reimburse SRT owners for aftermarket clutches, they know there is an issue with the factory ones.

Whoa, what made you want to have 3 srt-10 trucks? We all know its the baddest truck on the planet, but you have 3 and according to your sig, some are getting built up. Just curious.

HEHE. Because they put an "Ear to Ear grin" on my face everytime I drive them. As much as I drive I needed three to keep the miles even relatively low. Additionally I'm a big guy, so when you find a car/truck that fits you, just like clothes you buy a whole weeks worth ;)

Thanks for the info on your trucks. I know that mine is running way too rich. They (the 2 dealers that I have had it at say there is nothing wrong with it and the Air Fuel Ratio is fine). Although Service Mgr at second dealer said that they could not check ARF at WOT (wide open throttle). I have given them Dyno graph that shows AFR richer than 10 to 1. They say they have no way of measuring AFR at WOT. My truck does not have a clutch problem. The loss of power correspondes to the excissivley rich AFT. The way the truck performed during the first 680 miles is the way I want it to perform now. If I did not know how it ran for first 680 miles I would not know better. But once you know, you know. This is frustrating as always in dealing with people that do not take responsibility for what they do. But a fact is a fact. I am sure that DC would like me to go away quietly but that is not going to happen. I am able to pursue this as necessary to get my vehicle repaired properly.
fstjck-had no idea you r in san diego, where did you go to get dyno done? simply i'd like to see where mine is at. honestly, because i don't know if i'd be able to tell if i was running to rich,or there was a minor problem. thanx-TREV

I totally understand. Anychance the A/C is on? I notice a decent performance loss when it's on. Initially I road with the windows down, now that it is 85+ here in florida...

No Ac

10X3
Thanks for the heads up on th AC being on. It has not been. There is also a WOT AC cut out that shuts down AC compressor at WOT/full throttle. The degridation in power is much greater than the parasitic loss of the AC. Great idea , I wish it were that simple.
