Hello Everybody,
I found this forum and have found it to be a great source of info.
Hopefully somebody can help me out.
I have an SRT and love the truck but, it has a very strange noise when I start the engine cold.
A few seconds after it fires up there is a loud noise for about 8-10 seconds.
Sort of a howling or squealing noise that intensifies in pitch and volumn and then stops. It's almost as if something is pressuring up.
I don't think it's the belt because revving the engine during the noise has no effect, and it's a different sound then a loose belt makes.

I was going to take the belt off and try it but didn't have time before leaving for work again. Won't be home for a few weeks yet.

I do have some .wav files of the noise if I ever figure out how to post them.

Anybody have any ideas??

Ken

I have the same thing occur with my 2002 Chevy Trailblazer. Don't know the technical reason but has happened since I took delivery in October, 2002.

I have not noticed that sound yet on my Ram SRT 10 although the temps are still pretty mild in northern Wisconsin...will post some feedback over the next few weeks as temps drop.

I've had this happen once since I bought my truck. I think that it is the radiator fan spooling up. It is driven by the power steering pump, hydraulic rather than electric. Haven't heard it again.
I would definately get it checked. Might have to leave it overnight so the dealer can do a cold start.

I've got a 'sound' when I start it up cold as well. I figured it was the fuel pump. Certainly doesn't sound like anything INside the engine or trans. Doesn't seem to hurt anything either, and it does go away every time, so I'm not worried 'bout it! :D

I had the exact same noise! What oil filter are you guys using? Mine started after I did an oil change and used a ACDelco oil filter. It would happen every single morning and after work. I then changed back to a Mopar oil filter an it never made that noise again. I know it sounds crazy but give it a try.

I have a 'noise and my first oil change was done at the Dealer, so I guess I'm still running OE stuff. (Haven't looked underneath yet :D ;) )
FWIW, Alberta-SRT's description of the noise matched perfectly with my noise. I think the important part is if the noise changes with revving the engine. If it doesn't change than I doubt that the power steering pump/cooling fan is the problem. Why did my oil filter make a difference, I don't know  The oil passages in the ACDelco filter were smaller than the Mopar though...

At least I know I'm not alone.

Schklege--Your description fits, it's like a jet winding up for takeoff.

I have changed oil once since owning the truck and I used a Mopar filter.
The dealer told me that this engine takes the same filter as a couple other Mopars I own. I have a 93 5.2 Dakota and an 01 4.7 Grand Cherokee.
I questioned that and went to 2 more dealers and they all said the same thing.
I even took in the part number from the owner's manual and they said it comes up as the standard filter.
Not home to check the part number right now but all three dealers said the same thing.

Not sure if this is valid or not, but I had a Mobile 1 filter on after an oil change I did. Once the system was refilled upon startup I had a odd sound ( like a pump humming) that slowly decreased and dissapeared after about 10 seconds. Heard it a couple ov times shortly after, and now don't have it at all. 1 week later I was re-checking the oil and the dipstick read high...The truck had been sitting for about a week. I called the dealer and he asked which oil filter I was running....I told him , and he said that "he believes there is a check valve in the OEM mopar filter, and that the Mobil filter may not accomodate this. I had the filter changed and since no problem.

Not sure if this is BS or not...I was not really buying into it, but I have not had the problem since, ant the dipstick oil mark is always right on.

Not sure if this helps...any info would be appreciated.

I've changed the oil twice now (at 1k and 3k); used Mobil 1 filter the first time and K&N the second time. I have had the sound in the morning with both. At 6k I'll try the Mopar filter and see if it changes anything (now that I have two Mobil 1 filters on the shelf, of course).

Haven't Experienced strange noises

Ay Alberta SRT I haven't had any problems with sounds except for the rumble of the exhaust. I would seriously look at the power steering or alternator for a hot bearing or loose belt.
By the way I live out east of Edmonton and own a Red SRT10. I haven't seen ya at any shows or cruises.
If your looking for a place to check out some other cool machines check out the Edmonton Mopar club. We meet Thursday nights at Kingsway Garden mall, usually 6 to 9 pm. It would be nice to see another SRT.
By the way what color is your SRT and when did ya get it?

I have the same noise. If you listen, it is coming right between the truck, and the bed of the truck. I had it at the dealer, and they said that it was the fuel pump. They said not to worry. Kris

The noise that Alberta-SRT and I had were a lot louder than the fuel pump. It also was coming from the lower passenger side of the engine.

Great to Hear

Good to hear from another owner. It was way to wet to last night to show and shine, plus we had about 6" of hail from that storm. Glad I wasn't out in it.
Hopefully this weather straighten around so I guy can get some road time and take in some of these show and shines.
Have you done anything to your truck yet?
I added a tonneau cover and bug deflector so far. I'm going to try a K&N air filter with the stock intake. The intake on these trucks is just like ram air with the intake coming in the front grill and I think I'll insulate the intake line to the manifold for maximum cool air. Other then that I haven't done to much to it yet.
Oh ya the oil filter is the same as the others and I haven't had any sounds.
Look forward to seeing the Black Machine.

Not much for mods yet

Haven't done much for mods,
Put a black antenna on it, Better floor mats, and the stainless dodge door sills.
Dodge got this truck right, it doesn't need much.
Might upgrade the speakers, but I just listen to that sweet exhaust tone most of the time anyway.

Wanted to put a Truxedo low profile cover on but it won't work with the wing.
Probably will upgrade to a K&N drop in also.
I have a Borla cat-back and K&N FIPK on the Jeep, sounds great. Giving that some thought, a lot of guys here on the forum have gone with the Magnaflow, I would really like to hear one before changing the stock exhaust which already sounds pretty good.
