hey guys,
got my new srt-10 (silver) about 2 weeks ago, and i love it. this thing is a beast. i can really only compare this to my fathers bmw M roadster and his vette, and i think i can now take him. i never reaaly owned a muscle car, the closest thing being was a bmw 330, and saying thats a muscle car is a stretch.

my question is: is it normal for the engine temp to vary frequently? every other car i have owned has always had a stable temp. i know this is a high performance engine, but it seems like if you were to get stuck in bumper to bumper traffic on a 90 degree day, you would be finished. the only time the engine temp is constant is when i am going above 50, obviously the wind is holding the temp down.

not sure if i am overreacting or not reacting enough.

thnx guys.

i would say it ranges from 190 to just over 230. it just makes me constantly stare at the engine temp gauge, which i dont like doing. but if this is completely normal i will disregard it.

i am also now wary of taking this truck on long trips with the fear of getting caught in traffic on a hot day and overheating.

thanks 9seconds.

Mine has never reached 230 degrees....at least when not at the track...and I do not record it getting to 230 then either. The electric fan kicks on at about 205 to 210 degrees?? Highest oil temp I have had was just over 210 ish. Florida heat and humidity to boot. I was looking at performance fans that have 3000 cfm cooling down the motor vs. whatever the factory fan puts out....
Possibly 600 to 1000 cfm?? I believe this may be an important tool when nearing headers and a "huffer" install.

Was checking out hot rod tv or one of the shows and they had a clip on the Flex A Lite fans....they are pretty effective at increasing the amount of airflow around that motor.

Fan

I have never had mine run over 210 ever in 100 degree heat and bumper to bumper traffic. The oil temp has peaked at 215. The fan on the SRT-10 is hydrostatic driven off the power steering pump.

Here on Maui mine is usually at about 200 once its warmed up...I have never seen it higher and we have 85 to 95 temps everyday this time of year...oil temp is usually the same or maybe a smidge higher.

well i monitored my engine (in heavy rush hour traffic) temp as well as my oil temp. my oil temp remained almost constant. the engine temp remained almost constant except for instances when clutch was going in and out and when i really hit the engine. the highest i saw it go up was about 215, and when it reached there, it seemed to come rite back. i am assuming the fan kicked on. hopefully i am not around if the fan malfunctions because this engine may kick up to about 500.
