hiya
my 2005 quad cab srt-10 keeps spitting its coolant into the the bottle next to the radiator.
if the cars is at idle it sits for an hour and does not lose a drop but after driving for twenty minutes or so it starts filling the overflow bottle until it
is full and radiators empty.
when it first happened i changed the radiator cap but it made no difference.
i thought it was the head gasket so put it in to an american car specialist over here and he had the car a few days then told me he done compression test and leakdown test and no problem and it was an airlock and he had cured it.
30 minutes after picking up it shot all its water out while cruising at 70 down the motorway - i refilled it and for the next 2 hours did not lose a drop.
there is no water in the oil or oil in the water, the radiator cap seats fine
im not sure if he really did the compression tests as plugs and leads look undisturbed (still dirty ).
theres no coolant leaks anywhere and temp gauge reads normal when it starts
spitting out the coolant.it can go days without spitting a drop another time
it will start pushing it into the bottle after 5 minutes.

any ideas?????????

is ur thermostat working properly, cheap to replace...make sure u get one with a open fail safe....other than that i cant think of anything...pretty simple system......its weird for it to do it while driving instead of sitting still in my opinion.....i would still replace the t-stat and re purge the radiator fluid again....try and find a viper specialist in ur area if u cant do it yourself....all u need ist the service manual...

Agreed, change out the T-Stat with a New one. Make sure you Bleed the Air out of the system as you Re-Fill. There is a pit-valve that sits on the T-stat housing, make sure it is open when filling slowly. When fluid starts to come out the valve close it off and then top off the system.

Something I just thought of, Does your fan come on when it get to normal temps??? It should to help keep the system cool.

One could also check the mixture of the coolant. 50/50 is generically ideal. There are also ph balance strips that help determine the quality of the coolant. If the mixture is done wrong, it will lower the boiling point and allow for the motor to actually boil the coolant and cause it to bubble over. And the type of coolant, I don't know what is required, Prestone makes a universal one.

Agree with Troy to consider a Viper specialist before you end up with a cracked head..

I did some more tests today and im sure its not the head gasket.
the thermostat opens at about 185/190 then the bottom hose gets hot so i think thats working.
My fan spins all the time but im thinking today that ive never really heard it going for it
when the car has got hot.
i think it runs off the power steering fluid but does it suddenly kick in like other fans when it gets really hot cos if does i cant remember ever hearing it.
wheres the switch/thermostsat that turns the fan on and how do i test it?
thanks for your help guys i need my truck and its killing me not driving it.

I have only got the repair manual for 2006 but mine is a 2005 qc and i think the cooling system is different (it has an extra bottle).
Does anyone know where i can download a repair manual for an 05??

COOLANT LEVEL CHANGES IN
COOLANT RESERVE/OVERFLOW
TANK. TEMPERATURE GAUGE IS
IN NORMAL RANGE
1. Level changes are to be
expected as coolant volume
fluctuates with engine temperature.
If the level in the tank was between
the FULL and ADD marks at normal
operating temperature, the level
should return to within that range
after operation at elevated
temperatures.
1. A normal condition. No repair is
necessary.

this is striaght from the manual.....

sorry but it spits all its coolant out so the bottle overflows then it overheats .
this is definately not normal and there is definately is a problem.
im going to have another go at it today - i think it might be fan related or an airlock in the lpg system.
thanks again

ok my question for you is....you say the lower hose is hot right? How hot? Like burn your freaking hand hot? How does the upper on feel compared to the lower? The upper radiator hose is the "return hose" so that one should be hotter than the lower as its bringing hot fluid from your motor to the rad to be cooled....So the lower hose is returning the cooler fluid back to the block......Are the hoses sucking in any time?

I think it's cured.
I took the thermostat out then run it around everywhere yesterday and today no problems in 100 or so miles.
Just waiting for my 170 thermostat now.
Thanks again guys

yup sounds like it was partially stuck, but you really don't want to run it without it open for long....that can stop your engine from warming up properly......Glad to hear you got it sorted out though.....like i said in my first post, make sure you get one that has a "open" fail safe!

My upper rad hose sucks in, whats causes that? Never saw it happen before
