Raced A Lightning

Last night I had a 03 lightning pull up next to me while I was heading down Gratiot. We wanted to catch a light, so we could have a little fun. So we did. The light turned green and I watched him take off while I sat there and smoked the tires like an ass. Needless to say he beat me. So we get side by side again and agree to take off from a 30 mph. rolling start, so we do. I had it in second and we both hit it, thats when I instantly pulled about a half a truck length on him, but then I go to shift to third and I loose the half a truck lead but I still stayed out front. We did this one more time at a 15 mph rolling start, again we take off, being honest I had little advantage on him we were glued side by side, but my problem comes when I shift. Evey shift I seem to loose a little ground alowing the lighning to pull ahead. I realy need more practice shifting faster along with getting off the line. Anyway we pulled into a gas station after the fun to check out eachothers trucks, he was a fan of the srt-10 which was cool, I almost thought he was going to be a **** about beating me but he was'nt. I go to find out that he has a different pully on his truck and that he also had his tires syped. Not to make excusses or anything the fact of the matter is he only beat me because my shifting realy SUCKS! Other than that I would have to come to the conclusion that we definately have the advantage once the truck is in motion, but it is a real headache to find out how to beat them off the line that's for me anyhow.

Seat time will get you there, sounds like you had fun & didn't get a ticket, thats what it's about.
It's hard to out shift an automatic :D

Glad you ran into a good guy, there are a lot of us out there, the DICKs are just more memorable LOL

Racing from a stop is all that matters! Racing at a roll has no skill involved.....NHRA and IHRA tracks don't race at rolls. I accepted your challenge. Didn't see your reply to mine. Why not meet at Milan on Wed, or Friday night. No $$$. Just for fun.

You up for it?
SATURDAY AT MILAN!

9am-12pm

there will be a TON of dodge R/t and Lightnings.
settle this grudge match then!

there will be only 60'ish cars. we rented the entire facility for 1/2 day
First, since the L has been out for several years, and the aftermarket is strong for them, it will be hard to find and unmodded one.

I wish they would make an auto version. Get a good converter and those trucks will be terrors right from the get-go!
Racing from a roll

Takes about as much as skill as steering an automatic, huh?

;)

tough start

as far as i can tell there is a rough trial period, getting the srt off the line,as it is not easy. 3000 rpms seems impossible but i havent owned a stick in 7 yrs.. as far as L's go- i can tell u i've been turned down, to play around, twice. knowing dam well i probably would of been beat, with my driving experience. oh well, looking forward to some internal work soon. i was schooled a bit yesterday, about the differewnce between bolt on's and true engine work. i will update soon on what were trying to do , but something along gears, crankshaft, rockers, and pulley something .

I thought we are talking about stock street trucks?Racing from a roll is all about the street..wonder how many Ram SRT-10 trucks are set up for strictly the 1/8-1/4? .I purchased the srt-10 to be a bad ass street truck, capable of hauling mx bikes etc..

Is that what the manual guys say to the auto guys in the pits. From my experiences when you line up in the staging lane the guy with the stick isn't screaming about the other car he's racing is in an auto. The money handed out at the end of the shoot-out goes to the driver that did the best driving.

If you think the L is easy to launch...You're kidding yourself. However, Ford did a better job in the engineering process to get the power to the ground alot easier than the SRT gang. Who's fault is that?

Street racing from the time it was born to the day, has always from a dead stop. The race started by a person waving a flag, hankerchief, flashlight or anything to signal "GO." Grocery $$$ was never won racing and starting at a 20mph roll. Even hill racing in california starts from a dead stop.

Racing from a roll is what the kids today have started. Why? Many suck at driving a stick from a dead dig. Or the car isn't equiped to run good out of the hole, So they opt to race in a way convenient to their skill.

I'm old school racing....No excuses. I can appreciate a skilled driver beating me and earning it. That earns respect! Racing at a roll is just a band-aid for lack of skill.

Where's that race jimmyg79? Get all the mod advice, tuning and racing tips from 9seconds you can. No excuses right? You called me out. Now you got a taste of what a L can do from a dead dig. I know it wasn't close or pretty.

You said to bring it. I'm bringing it....I've got clients lined up for the next week and a half. I have a Supra, Z06 and S/C harley to work on. I'm available to meet at the track any time next month.
I may not agree with everything Thor says, but I am in total agreement that racing from a roll is not racing. Stop, wait for the signal, and get it done.
What all was done to the Lightning? You said it had a pulley for sure, what size 2lb 4lb ?Anything else done? Chip, CAI, etc...
as a former L driver

As a former L driver i have to say the MY srt 10 it a b***h to launch

The L was a ton easier all you had to do was stomp it, then learn to pedal it to keep from smokin the tires an art that is practiced a lot

I never modded my L but i drove it like it was ment to be run

Since i have had my SRT 10 1 have run in to 2 L owners 1 was the coolest guy around, askin all sorts of questions and just being a good guy

the other was an ass, yet he would not run me ( hell he would have killed me i have not driven a stick in 5 years and I am still learning) he was just talking smack but would not step to the plate

I have driven fast trucks since 96 with my mild modded ram sst, then my heavy modded dak R/T, to my 2002 L I can make a car go with the best of them and i can say getting the SRT to run from a stop is gonna take serious seat time

I agree with all racing is from a stop unless its out on a course like gratton (where the srt will be this year with the porsche club--i did not make it with the L last year but im not missing it this time)

SugarLandExpress,

That's cool....I expect to get it back when I dish it out. That's th fun of these boards. I think the SRT is a nice truck and a very worthy competitor, even more so, once the owner has the launch down. Should give the average moded L a run for the $$$. When the traction mods become available I'll be happy for you guys....Then the truck will be all that much better.

To be honest my hang up on the truck isn't the looks or the powertrain. It's the cost for what you get and it not really still having the full functionality of a truck. It can pull small water craft's, and what you can put in the bed. It would have been worth the cash IMHO if it could have towed at least 5Klbs and still perform as it sits now. Then I'd really commend the dodge boys on a job well done! They still did a decent job....

I know I sling some of the chit around here to keep the rivalry going. No malicious intent on my part. I due call some people on things when I read it. If the day should come and I line up with a SRT and lose.....More power to the owner. He earned it. With me, it doesn't matter if he has slicks and N02. I live by the "Run what ya brung."

You guys have a safe summer racing and enjoying the trucks. I'll be keeping a lookout for jimmyg79 here in Michigan. You can run jimmy, but you can't hide in a SRT when driving in the motor city!
