Shifter Centering Springs???

5316 Views 33 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Sitedrifter
Sorry, don't know how else to describe them?

Anyway, with our Hurst Shifter, ya know how it's supposed to 'center' on 3rd and 4th gears, and you pull it to the left for 1st and 2nd, push to the right for 5th and 6th.

Does anyone know if it's possible to change the springs to stronger ones? I really think this would improve shift accuracy, especially on the 2nd to 3rd.

I remember Boomer saying the Ripper shifter was like this, but I'd like to keep the stock Hurst as I like the way it looks. :D

I was just looking at mine and I believe the spring can be changed. Do you know where to get replacement ones?
That would be my next question. :D

I guess my best bet would be to have a look at mine, maybe remove them, and do some searching.

Where the hell do ya buy springs??? :) Wonder if B&M Ripper shifters use similar springs?
Hit up Bill Pemberton. Woodhouse has been selling modified stock Viper shifters for years. I believe a spring change is involved.
Fine Idea! :) I believe I'll do that!
Got a reply from Bill. He gave me an e-maill address for Bob @ Woodhouse and said to ask him about it. Bill also said he'd mention it to Bob. Apparantly they have some sort of race to attend, so it may be next week until I hear from Bob. So for now,,

Dam that sounds fun!! Dam shame we don't have sometihing like that for the Ram SRT-10.

Also on topic let me know what you find out about the springs, sounds like good idea.
Could be the same?

Bill wrote this ---> "We are all wandering out of here to Laguna Seca for the last World Challenge Series he (Bob) will race in this year"

Is this race held as Laguna Seca?

Anyway, Yeah, I'll post whatever I find out, as soon as I find out! :D

No. That would explain why he is in 4th place in the VRL. He must have missed a race or two for the Speed Vision (or is it speed channel?) series race.
Bob e-mailed me today with some positive info. Here's what he said:

Mike,Yes I think there are some solutions for the shifter, before I can respond correctly though, let me do some investigating. If it is similar to the Viper we may have an answer, and yes, that 2-3 and 3-4 shift has been a problem in the Viper too. We put a stronger spring on the “center of pattern to driver side of shifter” that helped. I will need a few days to get back, then maybe we can post a solution for all our Ram associates. Thanks Mike

Whoo!! Keep us posted :D
This is a must in these Hurst shifters!! Can't wait!!
Haven't heard back from Bob yet. Understandably, this is not a priority for them. I figure they're trying to help us out so I don't want to seem impatient and e-mail him again. I'll give it another week or two I guess?

Jusy wanted to let you know I haven't forgotten.

I e-mailed him again a couple days back and got this reply:

We took an SRT-10 Ram in and put it up on the hoist to verify the shifter. It is a unique item, made by Hurst. This will not cross over from the Viper. Mark Jorgensen will be calling Hurst to verify if they have any solutions and he will report back to both of us. Sorry for the long delay.

So, we're still in the 'Waiting to See How The Hell We're Gonna Fix This Thing' process. Like I said, patience. :)
Can't he just hook you up with a supplier of springs? Then you could work with them to get a stiffer one. Looks like it comes apart pretty easily. Putting it back together could be a different story.

Story of my life.
Received this e-mail from Mark Jorgensen today (He's connected with Woodhouse):

Mike,
I have done some research and I think what I have to tell you is the shifter in the truck now should be the Hurst shifter with the ability to adjust tension and travel. The web says that these "billet" shifters have these features built in. We do not have proof of this yet but when I confirm it I will let you know.

Mark

To be able to fix the problem without the need to purchase anything! Wouldn't that be TOO Easy?

What do you think Steve? You had said you had yours out of the truck, right? Did ya notice anything that looked like it could be adjusted?

I didn't see anything. I'll look again tonight.
