So how come you're not allowed to tow with this truck?
Seems to have plenty of power to do so.
I'm looking into towing a 2 bike trailer and I want to make sure i'll be able to do so with out damaging anything in the drive train.
It is a truck after all right :D

The reason towing is not recommended is mainly that the transmission has not undergone the performance test which includes hauling x number of lbs. around for 30 hours. Also, the tires are performance type tires. All of this was from the Dodge guys (SRT).
A small hatch was put in the rear bumper cover for hitch access and a trailer plug can be found under there as well. You have to decide.

well, I guess thats good enough for me. I think she'll be able to handle towing a bike or two.

How about load though....does the sport suspension alter how much you can load in the bed?

I need to be able to tow my Syclone on a trailer, to the strip, 75 miles away, a couple times a year = about 5,000lbs.

My Lightning can do it without problem, and in order for me to seriously shop for one of these trucks, I need to know it can do it as well. Without voiding the warranty.

Any of you owners have plans on towing?

It's because it doesn't have enough low end torque?

I don't know about 5000 pounds

As a transmission guy, my guess would be that the clutch is the weak link. Two bikes should be no problem with a good driver, but 5000lbs. sounds like a bit much. (That'd be like 10,000lbs. gvw!) BTW, what is the load rating on those tires?

Not what I was hoping to hear...

I was so stoked about these trucks before they hit the showroom floors. Been craving a manual transmission for soooo long, and a big-azz V10 in front of that trans only made it sweeter. My bud actually saw a black one on Route 42 in NJ today and said it looked killer!! Mikey's real sad. :( :( :( And I haven't even seen one in person yet!!

 (Insert every curse word you know here)

Lots of reasons , guys, why the truck has a low towing capacity, but the main reason is height, suspensioning, and the tires. None are load rated, as this beast is made to haul around the track ,not stuff behind. Something light should be fine, but 5,000 would drop the back end down to far, and it is low enough as it is.Plus as 9 seconds commented on, the tires are super high performance tires, not load rated for towing. Kinda of a bummer to some, but it's the realities of making the "Worlds Fastest Truck!"

towing

I met a guy from PVO last year who was testing the SRT/10 proto types. I asked him if they were coming with the tow package and he said they were out in the desert towing camping trailers up long steep grades at 60+ and it was doing great but he wasn't sure what the final decision on the option would be. I wonder what the problem was?

I really can't accept the suspension as a reason. I usually use a u-haul trailer, and I end up backing my Sy on it so that I don't get too much weight up front. I tried pulling it on forwards, but my L squats so bad in the rear I'm afraid something would break.

If you're not familiar with u-haul trailers, they are not set up so that you can center the vehicle's weight on the trailer (the correct way). You basically have to pull it up to the front wheel stops to strap it down. That really seems to put the majority of the weight up front.

Does anyone know, or have they heard, if warranties will be voided if you DO tow with the truck?

TIA

If ride height was the problem, all you'd need are those 'load leveler' airbags; they're universal fit with leaf springs. My L is lowered 4" more than stock, and I tow my Mustang pretty regularly with it without any helper springs or bags. Heck, that was the initial reason for buying it! IMO, it's the clutch/trans and the tires. What is the load rating on those tires? (All tires have this info. on the sidewall.)

Last weekend, after the SRT guy explained to me why towing was not recommended (trans testing and tires), he stated "You want an automatic to tow".
I spoke with a high ranking SRT person recently and he stated for next year the Ram will be offered with the tow package and an automatic transmission. According to him,as was stated earlier in this thread, the testing was not done so the tow package was not offered as of yet, but it will be with the new model year which should be available for order in August/September. That info along with the info 9 seconds has might be good news for those of us who have an interest in towing. I guess we will have to wait and see how good our sources are.

What automatic are they going to put behind this thing?

It can tow a more than you think

I may not be able to decide between a Ram 2500 with the Cummins motor or the SRT-10, but I can tell you that some light towing or load hauling will not do a darn thing to damage the SRT-10. I own a trucking company and and a ranch. I've witnessed some overloading that would've made the manufacturers cringe, but nothing has ever happend to the trucks or the pickups due to overloading. They're stronger than you think. Manufacturers set these limits to cover their a*s*s and comply with state laws, perhaps California. I wouldn't use the SRT-10 as true work truck or puller, but I know it will hold up to more that Dodge likes to admit. It takes alot to break even a half ton truck. Small watercraft and such are jut fine and then some. :p

From what I understand they are going to use the automatic from the diesel, I'm told it will be able to handle the torque from the SRT-10 with no problems. Also something else that may or may not be of interest, there may be a quad cab version on the horizon.... Hmmmm chopper on the trailer, no shifting, all kinds of leg room, DVD player being viewed from the rear seat by the S/O, and all at 150 M.P.H. in the left lane. Like I said just tid bits which we will have to wait till summers end to see whats what.
